Back in June of 2021, I started working with this hip hop platform called No Ghostwriter that hadn’t really kicked off too much other than the owner’s YouTube profile that had like 10k followers at the time. I was hired as an editor, my job was to get writer’s work edited and published on the new website that was still being built when I was hired. I was also going to be writing a few of my own articles as it was something I’m pretty and comfortable writing about; hip hop and music culture. Very quickly I realized I was going to be doing a little more than just editing. I was having to source writers from Twitter, coach them on writing for our style, write copy for brochures and help with producing live events and covering all social media platforms. No biggie, I had done these things at Foodbeast and more so I wasn’t worried. We had a few great articles, one of my first was actually retweeted by the artist herself (Maliibu Miitch), another feature on a rising artist named Budman off TikTok, and some good timely posts about big events in hip hop. With the articles pumping out because of my schedule on social media and a wonderful event hosted by my boss in Shoreditch, No Ghostwriter blew up on YouTube and we started getting huge traffic on our platforms. We started creating newsletters to keep our fans engaged with the world of hip hop (which I wrote), and had a great deal of communication between readers and the editorial board. It was a great community that was actually all centered around Nicki Minaj so that’s always good. I had a great time working for them but had to leave so I could focus on my portfolio and expanding my writing. I was glad to get such a great insight for a startup blog but I also felt kinda like I was just at Foodbeast again without all the frills, so I left! But it was indeed an education and holding a Managing Editor position was really great, I’m glad I can be personable and discerning at the same time.
All in all we doubled our follower count by the time I left and had hosted two live events that I managed pitches and brochures for along with onboarding a few staff writers that still are there to this day. Good stuff!
