While at The University of Exeter, in Devon, I was in an American Modernism class that covered a pretty good stretch of transatlantic writers and thinkers. It was a wonderful class and I found some of my favorite writing and people through it, like Lee Miller the photographer. The coolest thing to me about literature is that it inherently spans everything. When we write stories they come from the world and a good story can change the way you think of your own. I liked how I wasn’t just reading authors and novelists the whole time. We dove into Surrealism a little bit and photography, just because of the way it asked people to think and how that related to literature in such a strong way. It’s a beautiful thing. I think it’s why I like photojournalism so much. But anyway, I wrote this paper on one of my favorite poets, E.E. Cummings. In this paper I try to compare the way E. E. Cummings wrote poetry to the way Surrealists thought of the world. I found that his style was heavily influenced by and influential of the often miscategorized genre of Surrealism. Also there’s an Erik Satie reference in there so enjoy that! But yes, if you’d like to read this please beware there are big words. I like big words. I use them well. Fuck off.
